The wine capital of Alsace
Colmar is the third-largest city in Alsace after Strasbourg and Mulhouse, and one of the most visited in France. Its well-preserved historic centre includes Petite Venise (with its canals and half-timbered houses lining the water’s edge), the Tanners’ Quarter, the Maison Pfister, the Unterlinden Museum and its famous Issenheim Altarpiece by Grünewald.
Our advice
Allow a full day to make the most of Colmar: spend the morning at the Unterlinden Museum, have lunch in a winstub, and spend the afternoon strolling through the narrow streets and Little Venice. Avoid weekends in summer and December (when it’s very busy). Parking is easier at the park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts.
